What is it?
- Gluten is a protein, which is found in bread, pasta, cookies, pizza crust and many other foods containing wheat, barley or rye. If a coeliac eats this protein, it causes an immune reaction in the intestines causing damage to the lining of the intestines. It also diminishes their ability to absorb nutrients.
How do I recognise it?
Most symptoms are very general:
- Intermittent diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
If someone in your family has coeliac disease, there is a 5-15% chance you will have it aswel. But apart from this it is not really known why some people are sensitive to gluten.
How do you treat it?
