What is it used for?

  • Piles (haemorrhoids).
  • Itching around the back passage (pruritus ani).

How does it work?

  • Preparation H ointment contains shark liver oil and yeast cell extract, which both help to soothe sore and itchy skin.
  • Shark liver oil has traditionally been used in the treatment of haemorrhoids, it acts as an emollient by forming a coating the skin to which provides a soothing protective layer. It helps to moisturise and lubricate dry, itchy skin. The yeast cell extract also has soothing properties.
  • Haemorrhoids occur when veins in the wall of the rectum become swollen and irritated and may cause irritation and pain on passing stools. This preparation is used to relieve the swollen tissues associated with this condition and to act as a lubricant to ease painful bowel movements when the skin is dry and sore.

How do I use it?

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying this medicine.
  • Preparation H ointment should be used after the bowels have been emptied. The area around the anus should be thoroughly washed and dried before using this preparation.
  • Preparation H ointment can both be used internally or externally for the anal area. For application into the back passage, a nozzle provided with the ointment should be screwed on to the tube. The nozzle should then be gently inserted in to the rectum and a small amount of ointment squeezed out. The nozzle should be withdrawn slowly. The nozzle should be thoroughly cleaned after each use.
  • Preparation H ointment should be used in the morning, at night and after each bowel movement.
