Why have I been prescribed Firmagon?

Firmagon (Degarelix) is prescribed to treat advanced prostate cancer.

How does it work?

  • Firmagon reduces the amount of testosterone produced in the body. Prostate cancer is dependent on the male sex hormones for growth. By stopping the effects of male sex hormones it is possible to slow down or shrink the tumour both in the prostate and the areas it has spread to.

When and how do I take it?

Firmagon is given as an injection under the skin in the abdominal region. As with other medicinal products given by subcutaneous injection, the injection site should vary. Injections should be given in areas that will not be exposed to pressure e.g. not close to waistband or belt and not close to the ribs.

What’s the dose?

Starting dose:

  • 240 mg administered as two subcutaneous injections of 120 mg each

Maintenance dose – monthly administration:

  • 80 mg administered as one subcutaneous injection

The first maintenance dose should be given one month after the starting dose.

Could it interact with other tablets?

There are no known interactions between Firmagon and other medications. However, you should tell your doctor if you are taking any medicines as some, like anti-arrhythmic medications, may have a similar side effect as Firmagon and affect the rhythm of your heart.
Herbal supplements should be used with caution and only after informing your doctor first.

What are the possible risks or side-effects?

The most common side effects are:

Can I drink alcohol while taking it?

  • There are no known interactions between Firmagon and alcohol.
  • Always ask your doctor/pharmacist however as this may depend on what other tablets you are taking.

What if I’m pregnant/breastfeeding?

Firmagon is not used in women.
